Casting Ponds
Did you know that San Francisco has some of the best casting ponds in the world? Honest and no kidding. Wait, do you even know what casting ponds are?
One of the biggest obstacles to becoming a decent fly fisherman (or woman) is finding a place to practice. Most people have to settle on open fields (like football or baseball), since there are a lot of those and you need to have enough room to cast without obstruction (there are enough obstructions, like trees, rocks or the back of your own head on the river). The problem with fields is that they are not water. And you need water to really practice casting out and picking up your fishing line. You don't need fish, but you do need water.
Golden Gate Park has some of the best casting ponds you'll ever find. There is even a cute little fishing lodge, where the folks get together to compare notes or just have a beer. We took the girls there today on this glorious sun-filled San Francisco day and watched people cast. Fun!
